Fellow Musicians:
I wanted to make you aware of a "best kept secret" in Clintonville, Ohio... just north of "the" Ohio State campus. I recently made a guitar purchase at Swampdogs Music & More where you will find arguably the finest guitars made anywhere in the world. Swampdogs carries Campbell American guitars as well as their Angry Angus line. These instruments are hand made in the USA . They are each a work of art and play beautifully. Russ Volk owns Swampdogs and sells other guitar lines as well and carries boutique tube amps including my favorite Valvetrain and the solid state ZT Lunchbox is there and worth checking out.
There are lots of other good stuff to choose from and if you drop by to see them at their High Street location make sure you meet Artie, Swampdog's guitar tech. He and Russ are terrific guys who love guitars and care about their customers as well as their product line. Should you drop by to see them ask Artie about the BBQ ribs down the street and have him point you in the right direction, you won't go wrong with that decision. Just so you know, Russ has not in any way asked me to send this note, nor do I get a discount for sharing this information... I simply found his store to be one of the best shops in Columbus and wanted to share that with you. Here are some links if you are interested...
Thanks...
Todd

Score another one for Clintonville! Swampdog's Music is Columbus's one stop shop for guitars and gear, as well as all your other other musical needs (even trombone players like meeee will find yourselves taken care of - Swampdog's has slide grease and value oil, as well as other accouterment for brass and reed players!). AND owner Russ V. now has the store all ramped up and increasingly cool with the additions of OSU musicology doctoral student/former String Shop guitar teacher Tom B. aaaaand the boy of Yelp review fame, my sidekick in most of MY reviews, Columbus's own Arturo X. (you know, THAT guy :), taking care of all your guitar repairs, retail guitar and amp suggestions, and general kick ass music knowledge, as well as advertising (be sure to grab one of the sweet new Swampdog's tshirts!). If this doesn't make you want to stop in, then clearly you have no soul. ;) 9/15/2010
Kevin: I have attached some photos of some recent equipment I bought here in Columbus. The first is a Campbell American Transitone and I assure you, this is one guitar that is not run of the mill or a copy cat. It is made in Blackstone Mass., by Dean Campbell.
As I understand Dean Campbell hooked up with some of the Guild luthiers after Guild was bought out by Fender. Campbell just wanted to make quality guitars so he started the company and has been making some really cool stuff. The pictures that are attached are the ones taken Russ Volk, owner of Swampdogs Music in Clintonville (just outside of Columbus).
Russ is a terrific guitar guy who gets it when it comes to players and he sells the good stuff. He also took the Angry Angus shots that I have attached as well. This guitar is by far the best guitar I have ever owned or played in my life! I love it. Clearly it is strat copy... but it is better than any strat I have played ... Russ took those shots as well and I snagged the from his site.
Lastly, I bought from Russ a Valvetrain Savannah amp... 16 watts, all handwired, American made and very responsive. Its a boutique amp without the price. The photo attached is an ebay seller but its the same amp. If you are interested, I included links to Russ' site, Campbell American, Angry Angus and Valvetrain. I know this reads like a sales pitch, its not, I am just really pleased to find a guitar seller that plays, loves guitar as much as I do and is competent and fair with his pricing. And I love the gear... so when we can, I'll bring some of this to Charleston and let you check it out. I know you are a Les Paul, Marshall kind of guy, but I think you'll still enjoy the sound - and the Transitone, is like a lightweight Paul that sounds terrific. OK, there you go... I can spend all day talking about this stuff, so I got to get back to work! Enjoy the websites

The screen door swings gently behind me as I enter the local instrument shop in this hipster ’hood of Clintonville. I was born and raised around the corner, so I instantly feel at home in the tiny, one-room, mom-and-pop store whose owner is on the phone with a customer and is apparently the only clerk there when I walk in. A little bit of everything—personally chosen and nice quality—that’s how it seems as I stroll through the narrow room, as if the owner picked his fave treasures for sale, and affordable ones at that. Swampdogs is just a comfy set up, like a neighborhood shop with a leather couch in the back to relax and pick a few lines on. The only thing I keep expect-ing to see is a shop dog. Even though the selection of acoustics isn’t particularly large or varied, I happen to find two of my favorite guitars right here, and they are both treasures with reasonable price tags attached to them. The pièce de résistance is this amazing 1964 Gretsch 6003 Folk Singer finished in a very nice tobacco burst. The owner explains to me that it is unusual for this model to have a triangular soundhole, making it unique from other 6003 Folk Singers. I fall in love with that vintage tinny resonance, and seriously start to consider purchasing it, though it doesn’t have a pickup in it and it might be strange to install one seeing as it’s a vintage guitar. He also shows me a used Martin SWDGT from the Sustainable Wood Series that features a solid Sitka spruce top, certified solid cherry wood back and sides, mahogany neck, and a certified katalox bridge and fingerboard. Admittedly, he notes that the strings haven’t been changed for a while, but, if I come back in a couple days, he’ll have ’em all tuned up for me. I like it there in Swampdogs, and I kind of feel like hanging out a little longer just to get to know the owner some more, as he’s already telling me stories and I really want to play that Gretsch a little longer. I take a deep breath and feel at home. |
